Data Platform and AI Applications

Mission

The Mission of the Unit is to aggregate, connect, and visualize data aligned with the Climate Hub’s objectives across five components:
  • inputs (funding sources),
  • outputs (research production),
  • outcomes (scientific developments, data, tools, policies),
  • effects (interdisciplinarity, networks) and
  • impacts (SDG links, research outreach)
Its overarching aim is to deepen the understanding of the science, technology, and innovation (STI) landscape for climate research and policy-making, by globally monitoring research activities, engaging with the key actors involved, assessing the ensuing societal and economic impacts, assessing and mapping out policy uptake across administrative scales and internationally, through interdisciplinary and intersectoral approaches.
The Unit pioneers cutting-edge AI applications across strategic domains that the GCH relates to (Earth System Modelling, Climate Dynamics and Predictions, Remote Sensing and Geospatial Applications, Ecosystems and Biodiversity, Economics, Policy and Society). Further, the Unit contributes to the creation of DSS, Spatial Computing / AR / VR / GeoAI applications and Digital Twins. In these efforts, the systematic integration of data and models is central in elucidating the research processes involved and in supporting evidence-informed decision-making.

Collaborations

Association for Computing Machinery ACM, the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society, delivers resources that advance computing as a science and a profession.

TReNDS: Thematic Research Network on Data and Statistics

An initiative of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the Thematic Research Network on Data and Statistics (TReNDS), mobilizes technical and policy-oriented solutions to advance the data revolution for sustainable development.

OpenAIRE

Its vision is to transform society through validated scientific knowledge and allow citizens, educators, funders, civil servants and industry to find ways to make science useful for themselves, their working environments and society while its mission is to shift scholarly communication towards openness and transparency and facilitate innovative ways to communicate and monitor research.

AI Tools

 AE4RIA SDG Tracker – quick-start guide

(embed this text next to the “Launch the tool” button)

What the tool does

Upload any English-language PDF (policy report, business plan, academic article, etc.) and the AE4RIA SDG Tracker instantly scans the full text and tells you how closely the document relates to each of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Curious about the underlying method? See Koundouri et al., “Mapping human security strategies to sustainable development goals: a machine-learning approach,” Discover Sustainability, 2025. (SpringerLink)

How to use it

  1. Choose your file

    • Make sure the text is selectable (scanned pages need OCR first).

  2. Click “Analyse PDF”

    • Processing usually takes just a few seconds.

  3. Read the results dashboard

    • Each SDG icon lights up with a coloured bar:

      • Green (2) = strong link

      • Orange (1) = moderate link

      • (no bar) = little or no link

    • A legend below reminds you what each goal covers.

  4. Run another document

    • Hit “Back to Upload” to analyse as many PDFs as you like.

Good to know

TipWhy it matters
Use the cleanest version of your file (direct export from Word/LaTeX)Yields the most accurate results
Large annexes of images slow things downTrim or compress before upload
Comparing documents?Scores are on a fixed 0-2 scale, so results are directly comparable

Disclaimer

This experimental research tool processes your file in memory only and does not store it. Results provide a rapid orientation and should be complemented by expert judgment for formal assessments. Users are responsible for any copyright considerations connected to the material they upload (see notice in the app footer).

AE4RIA AI Skills Tool – quick-start guide

(embed this text next to the “Launch the tool” button)

What the tool does

Upload any English-language HTML document (currently supported formats: HTML only) and the AE4RIA AI Skills Tool analyses the content to show:

  • Which skills are most relevant to the document
  • Which occupations these skills connect to
  • Which courses could help strengthen those skills
  • How the document aligns with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Note: At the moment, the tool only accepts HTML files and only in English.

Curious about the underlying method? See Koundouri et al., “Transforming documents into workforce insights: AI-enabled mapping of skills, occupations and SDGs,” https://arxiv.org/abs/2503.10094

How to use it

  1. Choose your file

    • Make sure to select an HTML document that contains relevant content aligned with the tool’s aim and scope (e.g. EU policies, international or national policies, strategies, or similar texts).

    • Only the English version is supported.
  2. Read the results dashboard

    • Skills Analysis: A distribution chart of top skills extracted from the document.

    • Occupations: A ranked list of occupations most closely linked to the identified skills.
    • Course Recommendations: Suggested learning resources to build or strengthen those skills.
    • SDG Analysis: A bar chart showing how strongly the document aligns with each of the 17 SDGs.
  3. Run another document

    • Hit “Back to Upload” to analyse as many HTML files as you like.

Good to know

TipWhy it matters
Use an HTML file with relevant content Other formats (PDF, DOC, scans) are not accepted at the moment
Choose English documents only skill and occupation mappingEnsures accurate
Explore all tabs (Skills, Occupations, Courses, SDGs) Provides a full picture from competencies to learning pathways
